The Ugandan Judiciary has launched a new digital judgment writing tool valued at Shs2.2 billion, aiming to reduce the nation's case backlog, which currently exceeds 167,000 pending cases. This initiative seeks to enhance court efficiency by streamlining the judgment drafting process.
According to the Annual Judicial Report 2025, Uganda's courts are burdened with 167,353 pending cases. Of these, 84,353 cases (49%) are at the pre-hearing stage, while 78,238 cases (47%) are under hearing. Additionally, 4,629 cases are awaiting judgment. The heavy workload, with each judge handling between 500 and 600 cases annually, has contributed to significant delays, particularly in the judgment-writing phase.

The introduction of this tool is expected to have several legal implications:
For the general public, this development signifies a move towards a more responsive and efficient judicial system. Citizens can anticipate reduced delays in legal proceedings, leading to swifter justice delivery.
The Ugandan Judiciary's adoption of the digital judgment writing tool marks a significant step in addressing the longstanding issue of case backlog. By leveraging technology, the Judiciary aims to enhance efficiency, improve access to justice, and rebuild public confidence in the legal system.
