Finland to Enforce Three-Month Unemployment Rule for Foreign Residents

Starting June 11, 2025, Finland will implement a new law affecting foreign residents with work-based residence permits. Under the legislation, permit holders who lose their jobs must secure new employment within three months, or six months for certain groups, to avoid deportation. The reform aims to strengthen the link between employment and residence permits, aligning with EU directives. Employers are also required to notify authorities within 14 days if an employment relationship ends prematurely. The law has sparked controversy, with critics arguing it may lead to increased deportations and labor market instability.
