Saint helena, ascension island and tristan da cunha
On 6 March 2026, the Executive Council of Saint Helena convened to address pressing issues, notably the economic repercussions stemming from the recent airport closure in February 2026. The council approved a Business Support Scheme designed to assist enterprises directly impacted by the disruption.
The approved scheme offers affected businesses interest-free loans and the possibility of the government pre-purchasing services. Eligibility and assessment criteria will determine the specific support each business receives. This initiative aims to mitigate the immediate financial strain on businesses reliant on visitor access and associated economic activities.
In a proactive measure to safeguard the island's livestock, the council also approved a prohibition on importing live cloven-hoofed animals, germplasm, meat, meat products, and non-UHT dairy products originating from South Africa. This decision responds to concerns about the potential introduction of Foot and Mouth Disease to Saint Helena. The Customs (Export and Import Control) Regulations, 1988, will be amended accordingly, with the prohibition effective from 7 March 2026.
These decisions underscore the government's commitment to supporting local businesses during unforeseen disruptions and protecting public health and agriculture. The Business Support Scheme is expected to provide much-needed relief to the business community, while the importation prohibition reflects a cautious approach to disease prevention.
Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about these developments and participate in upcoming discussions to ensure the measures effectively address the island's needs.
