Norway Abolishes Company-Specific Age Limits, Sets Standard at 72

Effective January 1, 2026, Norway has abolished company-specific retirement age limits of 70 years, establishing a standard age limit of 72 years. Lower age limits are now permissible only if necessary for health or safety reasons and objectively justified without disproportionate intervention.

This amendment applies to all employments under the Norwegian Working Environment Act and most employment governed by the Norwegian State Employees Act. Employers are advised to assess whether a lower retirement age is justifiable under the new criteria.

The change aims to standardize retirement age policies across sectors, promoting consistency and fairness in employment practices throughout Norway.
