Nepal's inaugural Consumer Court commenced operations on March 15, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to protect consumer rights. Established under the Consumer Protection Act 2018, the court aims to provide a specialized judicial platform for addressing consumer grievances and disputes.
The Consumer Court was constituted following a notice published in the Nepal Gazette on February 10, 2025. It is chaired by Judge Ram Prasad Sharma of the Kathmandu District Court, with under-secretaries Gehendra Raj Regmi and Ananda Raj Pokharel serving as members. Initially, the court's jurisdiction covers the Kathmandu Valley, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts.
The primary objective of the Consumer Court is to expedite the resolution of consumer-related cases, thereby enhancing consumer protection and promoting fair trade practices. It is tasked with handling complaints related to unfair trade practices, substandard goods and services, and other violations of consumer rights. The establishment of this court is expected to deter fraudulent activities and ensure that consumers have a dedicated forum to seek redress.
While the establishment of the Consumer Court has been welcomed by consumer rights activists, concerns have been raised regarding its operational efficiency and inclusivity. Activists emphasize the need for the inclusion of civil society representatives in the decision-making process to ensure transparency and impartiality. Additionally, there are calls for the expansion of the court's jurisdiction beyond the Kathmandu Valley to make consumer justice accessible to a broader population.
