The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has announced plans to sit in Glasgow from 18 to 21 May 2026. This marks a significant step in the Court's efforts to enhance accessibility and reflect its role as the highest court of appeal for the entire UK.
During this period, the Supreme Court will convene at Glasgow's City Chambers on George Square, a historic venue that has served as the headquarters of municipal government in Glasgow for over a century. The Court expressed gratitude to the Glasgow City Council for facilitating the use of this prestigious location.
While the Supreme Court is traditionally based in London, this decision underscores its commitment to serving all parts of the United Kingdom. The Glasgow sitting follows the Court's successful sessions in Manchester in March 2023 and previous sittings in other UK capital cities. By holding sessions outside London, the Court aims to demystify its proceedings and make them more accessible to the public across the UK.
The Court's Chief Executive, Vicky Fox, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "I'm delighted that the Court will be sitting in Glasgow." The move is expected to provide residents of Scotland with a unique opportunity to observe the UK's highest court in action, fostering greater public understanding of the judicial process.
