The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has caused severe humanitarian consequences, including widespread famine, displacement, and allegations of war crimes. The U.S., along with regional powers like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, facilitated the entry of humanitarian aid into el-Fasher, North Darfur, for the first time in 18 months. U.S. adviser Massad Boulos highlighted continued efforts to establish safe humanitarian corridors.
Recent fighting intensified in Darfur and Sennar. At least 19 civilians were killed in Jarjira, and a drone strike by the RSF in Sinja killed 10 and injured 9. Human rights groups accuse both sides of atrocities, with the RSF blamed for genocide and war crimes in Darfur. Over 8,000 people have recently fled violence in North Darfur.
The resumption of peace talks in Cairo is seen as a critical step toward ending the prolonged conflict. However, the success of these negotiations remains uncertain, given the deep-seated divisions and ongoing violence. The international community continues to advocate for a comprehensive and inclusive peace process that addresses the root causes of the conflict and ensures accountability for human rights violations.
