The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro has announced the extension of temporary protection for individuals from Ukraine until March 4, 2027. This decision aligns with the European Union Council's directive to provide continued support to those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to the Ministry's statement, the new decision, published in the Official Gazette of Montenegro No. 27/26 on March 2, 2026, came into effect on March 4, 2026. It extends the temporary protection previously set to expire on March 4, 2026, by an additional year.
The Ministry emphasized Montenegro's commitment to humanitarian principles and its dedication to harmonizing national policies with European Union standards. By extending temporary protection, Montenegro ensures that individuals from Ukraine can continue to reside legally within its borders and access associated rights and services.
Individuals currently holding temporary protection documents are urged to visit their local regional units or branches for civil status and personal documents. They should bring valid personal identification and their existing temporary protection documents, which are legally required to be returned upon renewal. The Ministry assures that the extension process is streamlined, allowing for the issuance of new documents in a very short time.
Furthermore, the Ministry stated that individuals from Ukraine applying for temporary protection in Montenegro for the first time will also be granted protection until March 4, 2027, in accordance with the new decision.
By achieving the status of a foreigner under temporary protection, individuals gain the right to residence and unhindered access to all rights associated with temporary protection, as stipulated by applicable legal provisions.
This extension reflects Montenegro's ongoing support for individuals affected by the conflict in Ukraine and its commitment to upholding international humanitarian standards.
