On February 4, 2026, a Hungarian court sentenced 25-year-old German anti-fascist activist Maja T. to eight years in prison for participating in violent assaults during the "Day of Honor" far-right rally in Budapest in February 2023. This case has drawn international attention and criticism.
The "Day of Honor" is an annual far-right event in Budapest commemorating a 1945 Nazi-led military action. In February 2023, Maja T. was among more than a dozen individuals who assaulted participants of this rally. She was accused of attempted aggravated bodily harm causing life-threatening injuries and assault committed as part of a criminal organization.
Maja T. was extradited from Germany to Hungary in December 2024. Notably, Germany's Constitutional Court had previously ruled that the extradition was unlawful due to concerns over humane treatment in Hungarian custody. Despite this, the extradition proceeded, leading to her trial and subsequent conviction in Hungary.
Supporters and family members have condemned the conditions of Maja T.'s detention and criticized Hungary's legal system under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's government, which designated antifa as a terrorist organization in 2025. The case has raised significant concerns about the treatment of activists and the state of judicial independence in Hungary.
