Cambodia aims to shut down all online scam centers within weeks

Cambodia has announced a major crackdown on online scam centers, aiming to shut down all such operations by the end of next month. Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, head of the Commission for Combating Online Scams, reported that since July, the government has targeted 250 suspected scam locations and successfully shut down approximately 200 of them. Authorities plan further suppression activities post-April to prevent a resurgence.

Cybercrime in Cambodia, often linked to human trafficking, has escalated globally, exploiting foreign nationals in scams involving romance and cryptocurrency fraud. So far, 79 legal cases have been initiated involving nearly 700 suspects, and close to 10,000 workers from 23 countries have been repatriated. Close cooperation with international partners, including China and the U.S., is ongoing. Recent raids in Phnom Penh led to arrests and the discovery of sophisticated tools used in fraud. These scams, which intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, have evolved beyond regional borders, reaching as far as Africa and Latin America.

Experts caution that unless systemic financial and protection networks are dismantled, operations may quickly re-emerge. The effectiveness of Cambodia's efforts will depend on sustained enforcement and addressing underlying issues that enable such operations to thrive.
