EU Acknowledges Albania's Reform Progress, Highlights Remaining Challenges

During a meeting in Brussels on March 3-4, 2026, European Union and Albanian officials reviewed Albania's advancements in justice reform, fundamental rights, and security cooperation. The European Commission commended Albania for nearing the completion of its judicial vetting process by the constitutional deadline of June 2026. However, the Commission emphasized the necessity of safeguarding judicial independence and enhancing the efficiency of the judiciary, especially in the post-vetting phase. While acknowledging legislative strides in data protection and gender equality, the EU pointed out ongoing challenges in media freedom and the fight against corruption. The Commission urged Albania to continue aligning with EU standards, particularly in combating organized crime and improving migration and border management practices.
