TCI Marks Opening of 2026 Legal Year with Pomp and Ceremony

The Turks and Caicos Islands judiciary and legal fraternity opened the 2026 Legal Year on Tuesday, January 6, with much fanfare and a renewed commitment to justice, integrity, and upholding the rule of law.

In keeping with long-established tradition, a solemn church service and a Special Court Sitting were held, attended by the territory’s highest-ranking officials.

The day began with a time-honored tradition at St. Monica’s Anglican Church, bringing together judges, legal practitioners, and public officials for prayerful reflection.

Premier Hon. Charles Washington Misick led the government delegation, which included Deputy Governor Her Excellency Anya Williams, Chief Justice Mabel Agyemang, and Hon. Attorney General Rhondalee Braithwaite Knowles.

Attendees included the Deputy Premier Hon. Jamell Robinson; Minister for Home Affairs, Religious Affairs and Transportation, Hon. Shaun David Malcolm; former Minister of Tourism, Hon. Josephine Connolly; and Member of Parliament for Leeward and Long Bay, Hon. Akierra Missick.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) executive, led by Commissioner Fitz Bailey, also attended in a show of dedication to the rule of law.

Commissioner Bailey was accompanied by Acting Deputy Commissioner Kendall Grant and Acting Assistant Commissioner Dwight Gardiner.

As is customary, the ceremony was heralded by a police marching band performance from the church to the Supreme Court Annex in Providenciales.

Following the church service, a Special Court Sitting was convened where key priorities and milestones were outlined for the upcoming year.

Chief Justice Hon. Mabel Agyemang, Attorney General Hon. Rhondalee Braithwaite Knowles, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the President of the Bar Association, Mark Fulford, each delivered statements, collectively underscoring the legal fraternity’s continued commitment to ensuring equitable access to justice for all citizens in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
