Indonesia has implemented a ban on social media usage for children under the age of 16, effective immediately. The regulation prohibits minors from creating accounts on high-risk digital platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox. This measure aims to protect children from online threats such as exposure to pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, and digital addiction.
Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stated that the government is addressing a "digital emergency" to safeguard children's futures. She emphasized that the regulation is designed to assist parents in protecting their children from the dangers of unregulated online content.
Many parents in Jakarta have expressed support for the ban, citing concerns over children's unrestricted access to inappropriate content. Some have also called for further restrictions on harmful websites, including those related to pornography and online gambling.
Indonesia is the first Southeast Asian country to implement such restrictions, following similar steps taken by Australia, where millions of underage accounts were removed.
