The Lower House of Jordan's Parliament has passed significant amendments to the 2024 Labour Law, introducing enhanced protections for pregnant workers. The new provisions explicitly prohibit the termination of employment for women during pregnancy and maternity leave, marking a substantial advancement in workers' rights within the Kingdom.
During a session chaired by Speaker Ahmad Safadi, lawmakers approved several articles focusing on worker protections and employment practices. Labour Minister Khaled Bakkar emphasized that the amendments unequivocally make it illegal to dismiss a pregnant woman under any circumstances, ensuring comprehensive protection during pregnancy and maternity leave.
Additional amendments include:
These amendments align the Labour Law with the Social Security Law, extending protections to workers not previously covered and harmonizing the treatment of occupational accidents. The reforms also aim to regulate the use of foreign labour and clarify procedures for workers who leave their jobs in violation of the law.
Lawmakers also addressed pressing issues affecting citizens, including the high cost of electricity and student loans, calling for expanded support for university students through increased loan and grant programs.
These legislative developments reflect Jordan's commitment to strengthening workers' rights and addressing socio-economic challenges through comprehensive legal reforms.
