UPP Advocates for Enhanced Port Security and Forensic Resources
The United Progressive Party (UPP) has called for immediate enhancements to Antigua and Barbuda's port security and forensic capabilities to combat the recent surge in gun-related crimes. Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle emphasized the need for proactive measures, including investing in technology and equipment to secure borders and adequately resourcing the police force and forensic laboratory.
Strengthening Border Security
Pringle criticized the government's reactive approach to crime and highlighted the absence of a clear strategy to prevent illegal firearms from entering the country. He stated, "We would have invested in technology and equipment to properly secure our borders, because that's where it starts." This includes ensuring that customs, immigration, and police officers are equipped with the necessary tools to be effective.
Building Community Trust
The UPP also stressed the importance of rebuilding trust between law enforcement and communities. Pringle noted that effective policing relies on public cooperation and information sharing. "We have to go back to strengthening the relationship between community and the police. Otherwise, police cannot act efficiently without information coming from the public," he said.
Addressing Legislative Gaps
In addition to operational improvements, the UPP advocates for legislative reforms to address gun violence proactively. Pringle emphasized the need to prevent firearm-related incidents before they occur, suggesting that current laws should be revamped to facilitate this approach.
Intelligence and Enforcement
Senator Jonathan Wehner questioned the effectiveness of current intelligence and enforcement efforts, suggesting that authorities should have insights into the sources of illegal firearms. "Are you trying to tell me that after all these years, the law enforcement agencies... have no clue who are the individuals bringing in illegal firearms?" he asked, indicating a need for more robust intelligence operations.
The UPP's recommendations come in response to a series of shootings, including the recent attack on Chinese investor Yida Zhang. The party's stance underscores a call for comprehensive strategies that combine enhanced security measures, community engagement, and legislative reforms to address the root causes of gun violence in Antigua and Barbuda.
