Turkey has implemented an amendment to its Highway Traffic Law, introducing significantly tougher penalties for a wide range of traffic offenses. The law, approved by the Grand National Assembly on February 12, aims to enhance road safety and deter dangerous driving behaviors.
Drivers engaging in aggressive behaviors, such as persistently following another vehicle with intent to attack or exiting their vehicle for that purpose, now face an administrative fine of₺180,000. Additionally, their driving licenses will be revoked for 60 days, and their vehicles may be impounded for 30 days. Reinstatement of licenses requires a psychotechnical evaluation.
Running a red light incurs a₺5,000 fine, with penalties escalating for repeat offenses within a year, reaching up to₺80,000 for a sixth violation. Speeding fines range from₺2,000 to₺30,000, depending on the severity, with significant excess speeds leading to license suspensions of 30 to 90 days.
Drivers who flee after ignoring a police "stop" command face a₺200,000 fine, a 60-day license revocation, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment. Driving with an alcohol level above 0.50 per ml results in a₺25,000 fine, with higher penalties for repeat offenses.
Driving without a license now incurs a₺40,000 fine, while using fake or altered license plates results in fines of₺140,000, rising to₺280,000 for repeat offenses, alongside possible vehicle impoundment and prosecution under forgery laws.
Authorities emphasize that these reforms are designed to strengthen deterrence, improve compliance, and enhance road safety nationwide.
