The United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) is scheduled to review Samoa's adherence to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance during its 30th session from March 9 to 19, 2026. This review is part of the Committee's ongoing efforts to ensure member states comply with international human rights obligations.
Samoa is among the 78 States Parties to the Convention, which aims to prevent enforced disappearances and ensure justice for victims. The upcoming review will assess Samoa's legal framework, institutional measures, and practices related to preventing and addressing enforced disappearances.
The CED, composed of 10 independent international experts, will hold public dialogues with Samoa's delegation to discuss the country's report, examine specific cases, and provide recommendations for improvement. These sessions are open to accredited journalists and will be live-streamed on UN Web TV.
This review is crucial for Samoa to demonstrate its commitment to human rights and the rule of law. Positive feedback could enhance the country's international reputation, while identifying areas for improvement may lead to necessary legal and policy reforms.
Civil society organizations and other stakeholders are encouraged to participate by submitting reports and attending public sessions. Their involvement ensures a comprehensive evaluation of Samoa's efforts in preventing and addressing enforced disappearances.
