EU ends legal standoff with Poland over democracy concerns

The European Union's executive has decided to end its six-year legal dispute with Poland, acknowledging the reform efforts by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's administration. Since taking office in December 2023, Tusk's pro-European coalition has worked to reverse controversial judicial, media, and reproductive rights reforms introduced by the previous nationalist Law and Justice party. These reforms had led the EU to freeze billions in funds and consider suspending Polandâs voting rights. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Polandâs reform efforts, stating that the restoration of the rule of law benefits both the country and the broader EU. The decision to drop legal proceedings now awaits formal approval by the 27 EU member states, though significant objections are unlikely.
