FBR challenges tribunal ruling on wedlock policy in Supreme Court

On March 8, 2026, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) petitioned the Supreme Court to review the Federal Service Tribunal's interpretation of the wedlock policy, questioning whether civil servants have an absolute right to remain posted at a single station indefinitely. The FBR's petition cautioned that the tribunal's reading of the policy could have significant implications for the overall civil service structure throughout Pakistan.

The matter was recently heard by a three-member Supreme Court bench led by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail. After a brief hearing, the bench issued notices to the respondents, including Jan Muhammad, an FBR employee who had previously challenged his transfer order before the tribunal. The Supreme Court is now set to determine whether a civil servant can claim the right to remain posted at a single station indefinitely under the wedlock policy. The outcome of this case is expected to clarify the extent and application of the wedlock policy for government employees, particularly in relation to transfer and posting rights.
