On October 16, 2025, the University of Macau (UM) commenced the 15th International Conference on the Legal Reforms of Macao in the Global Context, focusing on studies related to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code of Macao.

International Collaboration on Legal Reforms

The conference brought together legal professors, scholars, institutional representatives, and students from various countries, including China, Portugal, Angola, Brazil, and Mozambique. The discussions centered on the modernization of criminal law and criminal procedure law, addressing challenges and exploring improvements within a global context.

Dean Tong Io Cheng of UM's Faculty of Law emphasized the university's commitment to addressing legal and governance issues. He highlighted Macao's unique legal system as an important gateway for international legal exchanges, providing opportunities to learn from experts in Portuguese-speaking countries and accelerate judicial reform.

Focus on Contemporary Legal Issues

The two-day conference aimed to raise awareness of pressing issues in criminal law, such as cybercrime, data protection, and financial crime. By fostering dialogue between different legal systems, the event sought to promote the internationalization of criminal law research in Macao and strengthen connections with the global legal community.
