Liberia Reaffirms Peaceful Border Resolution with Guinea
The Liberian Government has issued a policy statement reaffirming its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the Liberia-Guinea border crisis, rejecting any actions that could heighten tensions along the border. The government emphasizes that the situation must be handled through dialogue, diplomacy, and established regional and international mechanisms, avoiding unilateral actions or inflammatory rhetoric.
Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah, speaking at the Ministry of Information's regular press briefing on June 2, 2026, emphasized Liberia's unwavering commitment to peace, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good neighborliness in its relations with Guinea. He stated that the border situation is a matter for calm, facts, and sustained engagement, not confrontation.
Minister Piah referenced the March 2026 tripartite engagement in Conakry between the Presidents of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, which reaffirmed that border disputes should be resolved through diplomatic means, with technical follow-up by relevant national institutions. The leaders agreed to convene a Mano River Union Summit, anticipated in July, to revitalize regional consultation on peace, security, and development.
Furthering the March 2026 Presidential understanding, President Joseph N. Boakai dispatched a special presidential envoy in April to Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Sierra Leone to follow up on the communique issued at the end of the tripartite meeting in Guinea and to prepare for the Mano River Union Summit. These initiatives reflect Liberia's seriousness about continuous engagement, practical diplomacy, and timely de-escalation of the situation.
The Liberian Government has also maintained consultation with border security and diplomatic partners to keep lines of communication open and prevent the incident from escalating. Additionally, during the recent Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, President Boakai met with President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire and Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya to discuss the urgent need to resolve the border crisis. These engagements underscore the shared recognition among regional leaders that the border dispute must be settled through coordinated diplomacy and regional solidarity.
