Laotian Activist Sisay Luangmonda Found Dead After Disappearance

Sisay Luangmonda, a prominent Laotian human rights activist known for his outspoken criticism of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, was found dead on February 20, 2026, six days after his reported disappearance. His body was discovered near the village of Dong-phonhae in Hadxayfong district, Vientiane, alongside his motorcycle and a bag containing alcohol. Sisay, who operated under the online pseudonym 'Mr. Khaen,' had previously received death threats and expressed concerns for his safety. In September 2025, he released a video stating that if he did not post for three consecutive days, it would likely indicate his death. Despite his family's reports of his abduction by soldiers, Laotian authorities have denied any involvement. Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have called for an immediate and impartial investigation into his death, highlighting the risks faced by government critics in Laos.
