EFTA Closes Case Against Iceland After Compliance with Accounting Standards

On February 4, 2026, the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) announced the closure of Case No. 93566 against Iceland, following the country's incorporation of Regulation 2023/1803 into its national legal framework. This regulation pertains to the adoption of certain international accounting standards, aiming to enhance transparency and comparability in financial reporting.

The case was initiated due to Iceland's initial failure to incorporate the regulation by the compliance deadline of December 7, 2024. The ESA issued a letter of formal notice on March 28, 2025, and a reasoned opinion on July 9, 2025, urging Iceland to align its national legislation with EEA obligations.

In response, Iceland took the necessary legislative measures, and by January 15, 2026, confirmed that the regulation had been fully integrated into its legal system as of December 30, 2025. Consequently, the ESA determined that Iceland had rectified the non-compliance issue, leading to the closure of the case.

This development underscores the importance of timely incorporation of EEA regulations to ensure uniformity and legal certainty across member states. It also highlights the effectiveness of the ESA's monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in maintaining compliance within the EEA framework.
