Ireland Amends Non-EEA Family Reunification Policy

Effective 12 June 2026, Ireland has implemented significant amendments to its non-EEA Family Reunification Policy, introducing stricter financial and accommodation requirements for sponsors.

Key Changes for Irish Nationals and Certain Non-EEA Nationals

  • Accommodation Requirements: General Employment Permit holders and other Category C sponsors must now provide supporting documentation demonstrating their ability to accommodate joining family members. Sponsors residing in certain supported accommodations are deemed ineligible.
  • Increased Financial Thresholds: The financial thresholds for Irish citizens applying to be joined by spouses and children have increased. Sponsors must now show a gross income over three years of €75,000 (€25,000 per year), up from the previous €40,000 (€13,333 per year). Other financial thresholds have been adjusted in line with indexation.

Changes for Individuals Granted International Protection

  • Waiting Period for Family Reunification: Individuals granted international protection status are now required to wait two years from the date they were granted protection before becoming eligible to apply for family reunification under the new International Protection Act.

These amendments aim to ensure that sponsors are adequately prepared to support their family members upon reunification, aligning with Ireland's broader immigration reforms.
