The Shire of Christmas Island has initiated a comprehensive review of its local laws, inviting public submissions until April 7, 2025. This periodic review, mandated every eight years under the Local Government Act 1995, aims to ensure that the community's needs are met and that the laws remain relevant and effective.
Local governments in Western Australia are required to review their local laws every eight years to ensure they remain appropriate and effective. This process allows the community to participate in the law-making process by providing feedback on existing laws.
The review encompasses several local laws, including those related to animals, environment and nuisance, cats, dogs, health, waste, parking and parking facilities, plastic bag reduction, standing orders, and cemeteries. These laws govern activities on land owned or managed by the Shire, as well as certain activities on private land within the Shire.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to submit their feedback on the current content of the local laws. Submissions can be emailed to chris@shire.gov.cx or mailed to the Shire of Christmas Island at Attn: Chris Su, PO Box 863, Christmas Island, WA 6798. The deadline for submissions is the close of business on Monday, April 7, 2025.
After the submission period, the Shire will consider all feedback and present a report to the Council. The Council will then determine whether to amend, repeal, or retain the local laws. If amendments are proposed, the draft local law will be advertised for community comment for at least six weeks, as required under the Local Government Act 1995.
For queries about the process, residents can contact Chris Su at the Shire of Christmas Island during George Fam Centre opening hours on 9164 8300 (237) or on 040 799 4218 during office hours.
