Estonia Adopts New Asylum Law
On May 18, 2026, the Riigikogu passed the Act on Granting International Protection to Aliens, aligning Estonia's asylum procedures with the EU's Common Asylum System reforms. The Act introduces border procedures for swift decisions, mutual recognition of asylum decisions among member states, and an EU-wide migration information system. It also specifies asylum seekers' obligations and strengthens legal protections, aiming to enhance control over immigration and streamline processes. This legislation signifies Estonia's commitment to a unified and efficient asylum framework within the EU.
