Egypt's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has announced plans to implement an electronic licensing system for groundwater wells nationwide. This initiative aims to enhance oversight of groundwater usage and promote the adoption of modern irrigation techniques and solar-powered pumping systems.
Implementation of Electronic Licensing
Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam directed the rollout of the electronic licensing system during a recent meeting focused on groundwater management. The system is designed to streamline the licensing process, allowing users to receive approvals electronically, thereby expediting procedures and improving service delivery.
Enhancing Digital Governance
The ministry is also focusing on strengthening digital governance within the groundwater sector. By improving digital monitoring capabilities, authorities aim to better oversee wells across the country, ensuring compliance with regulations and sustainable water use practices.
Promotion of Modern Irrigation and Renewable Energy
Minister Sewilam emphasized the importance of adopting modern irrigation systems, particularly in areas reliant on groundwater. The ministry is advocating for the use of solar energy to operate groundwater wells, a move intended to reduce operational costs and encourage the use of clean energy sources.
Government's Commitment to Water Resource Management
These measures are part of Egypt's broader strategy to address increasing pressure on its limited water resources. Public Awareness and Training
The ministry is considering launching awareness campaigns to educate the public on regulations governing groundwater use. Additionally, there are plans to provide intensive training for young engineers through the Regional Training Center for Water Resources and Irrigation, aiming to develop a new generation of technical staff specialized in groundwater management.
