Denmark's New Government Unveils Policy Programme
On June 2, 2026, Denmark's newly formed four-party coalition government, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, unveiled its comprehensive policy programme. The coalition comprises the Social Democrats, the Moderates, the Green Left Party, and the Social Liberal Party.
The policy programme outlines several key initiatives:
- Tax Reforms: Plans to abolish the top two tiers of income tax and reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on food items.
- Climate Goals: Ambitious targets to accelerate Denmark's transition to a green economy, including investments in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.
- Immigration Policy: A strict approach to immigration, with measures aimed at increasing deportations of individuals without legal residency status.

The coalition's formation follows 69 days of negotiations after the March 24 parliamentary elections, which resulted in a fragmented political landscape with 12 parties represented in Parliament. Despite the Social Democrats securing only 21.09% of the vote, Frederiksen maintained her leadership through support from other left-leaning parties and crucial backing from Lars Løkke Rasmussen, leader of the Moderates.
The new government holds 82 of the 175 parliamentary seats, forming a minority government that will rely on external support from parties such as the Red-Green Alliance and The Alternative to pass legislation.
The policy programme reflects the coalition's commitment to addressing economic challenges, advancing environmental sustainability, and maintaining a firm stance on immigration, aiming to balance progressive reforms with fiscal responsibility.
