Sarkozy Appeals Conviction in Libyan Campaign Financing Case

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared in a Paris court on March 16, 2026, to appeal his conviction for illegally financing his 2007 presidential campaign through funds allegedly received from Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s government. Found guilty of criminal conspiracy in September, Sarkozy, 71, was sentenced to five years in prison, of which he spent 20 days before being released under judicial supervision pending appeal. The appeal, lasting until June 3, will reexamine the evidence involving Sarkozy and nine other defendants, including three former ministers, accused of forming a criminal association to secure Libyan funds. Sarkozy maintains his innocence and decries the allegations as politically driven. Despite multiple legal challenges post-presidency, he continues to wield influence in conservative politics. Additionally, France’s top court recently upheld a separate conviction relating to his 2012 campaign financing, sentencing him to six months of house arrest with an electronic tag—a punishment yet to be enforced.
