In a significant political development, opposition parties in S03o Tomee and Preedncipe have played a pivotal role in the approval of the 2026 state budget during its first reading. This move comes amid a complex political landscape marked by divisions within the majority party.
The state budget and the five-year government spending plan were approved with 34 votes in favor. Notably, these votes included 18 from the Movement for the Liberation of S03o Tomee and Preedncipe (MLSTP) and two from the Basta Movement, both opposition parties. Additionally, five votes came from the Independent Citizens' Movement-PS/PUN coalition, and only nine from the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party, which holds an absolute majority of 30 seats in parliament.
Most ADI MPs were absent during the vote, and two, including former Speaker of Parliament Celmira Sacramento, abstained. This absence highlights internal divisions and challenges within the majority party.
