The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Yemen, effective March 3, 2026. This decision follows multiple extensions of Yemen's TPS designation since its initial grant in September 2015, with the most recent extension covering the period from September 2024 to March 2026.
The DHS cited improvements in conditions in Yemen as the basis for not extending the TPS designation further. However, the exact reasoning behind the department’s decision remains unclear, with a forthcoming federal register notice expected to provide more details. There will be a sixty-day grace period between the publication of Yemen’s TPS termination in the federal register and the cessation of TPS protections.
This move aligns with several other TPS terminations over the past year, affecting countries such as Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, South Sudan, Sudan, Haiti, Syria, Nepal, El Salvador, and Ethiopia. Not all these terminations have been finalized, as some were blocked by federal judges and reaffirmed in circuit court rulings. Yemen TPS beneficiaries are advised to seek alternative legal status before the termination deadline.
