The European Union's Green Transition Directive, adopted in March 2024, is set to enter into force in September 2026, bringing significant changes for businesses operating in Norway. The directive aims to enhance consumer protection by combating greenwashing and ensuring better information about product lifespans and repairability.
Key provisions include prohibiting vague and unsubstantiated environmental claims, requiring third-party certification for sustainability labels, and mandating clear disclosure of products' environmental properties. Violations may result in fines, confiscation of income, or exclusion from public procurement.
Norwegian businesses marketing goods and services to consumers in the EU and EEA must prepare to comply with these new regulations, which will be implemented by the Ministry of Children and Families by March 2026.
