President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that legal proceedings for all suspects detained for over a year will be concluded by the end of March 2026. This decision follows repeated public appeals to expedite court proceedings involving long-term detainees. The Attorney General's Office has confirmed the timeline, aiming to address the issue of prolonged detention and ensure efficient delivery of justice.
As of now, 347 individuals are in custody pending trial, accused of serious crimes including murder, terrorism, child sexual abuse, assault, and drug trafficking. President Muizzu emphasized that these detainees cannot be released without proper judicial review, underscoring the gravity of their alleged offenses.
The government is implementing judicial reforms to ease pressure on the courts and address prolonged detention issues. These reforms aim to ensure that justice is delivered both efficiently and responsibly, reflecting the administration's commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Once cases of long-term detainees are concluded, the government will review the remand status of other individuals in custody. This comprehensive approach seeks to balance the rights of the accused with public safety concerns, fostering a more effective and fair judicial system.
