Bangladesh to Present 133 Ordinances to Parliament on March 12

The Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Md Asaduzzaman, is scheduled to present 133 ordinances before the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) on March 12. These ordinances were promulgated by the President under Article 93 of the Constitution during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, when the parliament was not in session.

Of the 133 ordinances, 17 were issued in 2024, 80 in 2025, and 36 up to February 2026. Additionally, a presidential order—the July National Charter (Constitution Reform) Implementation Order, 2025—was issued. Legal experts have noted that while ordinances require parliamentary approval, presidential orders do not necessarily need to be placed before the legislature.

The presentation of these ordinances is a constitutional requirement, ensuring that laws enacted during the parliamentary recess are reviewed and approved by the elected representatives. This process underscores the checks and balances inherent in Bangladesh's legislative framework.

The upcoming parliamentary session is expected to be significant, as it will address a substantial number of ordinances that cover various aspects of governance and legal reforms initiated during the interim period. The deliberations will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to scrutinize and debate the measures, ensuring they align with the nation's constitutional principles and the public interest.

Observers anticipate that the session will also address the legal status and implications of the July National Charter, which has been a subject of debate among legal experts and political analysts. The Charter, aimed at constitutional reforms, has raised questions regarding its validity and the process of its implementation.

As the nation prepares for this critical parliamentary session, stakeholders from various sectors are keenly watching the developments, hoping for a transparent and inclusive legislative process that upholds democratic values and the rule of law.
