Ascension Island to establish new telecommunications service

On 18 November 2025, the Ascension Island Government (AIG) announced plans to establish a new telecommunications service, Ascension Island Mobile Ltd, following the decision by Sure South Atlantic Ltd. to cease operations on the island by 28 February 2026. The new network, designed and built by Omnitouch Network Services in partnership with AIG, aims to ensure continued telecommunications services for the community from 1 March 2026. While the new network will be separate from Sure's existing infrastructure, efforts are being made to minimize disruption and provide information as arrangements are confirmed.

Background

Sure South Atlantic Ltd. has been the primary telecommunications provider on Ascension Island. Their decision to cease operations necessitated the establishment of a new service to maintain connectivity for residents and businesses.

Implementation

Ascension Island Mobile Ltd will operate a newly built network, with Omnitouch Network Services leading the design and construction. The transition aims to be as seamless as possible, though some services may differ from current arrangements.

Implications

This development highlights the importance of telecommunications infrastructure for remote communities. The establishment of Ascension Island Mobile Ltd ensures that residents and businesses will continue to have access to essential communication services, supporting both daily life and economic activities.
