Ascension Island Government Seeks New Telecom Provider

On 18 November 2025, the Ascension Island Government (AIG) provided an update regarding the future of telecommunications on the island. Following notice from Sure South Atlantic Ltd. of its intention to cease its role as the on-island telecommunications provider on 28 February 2026, an extraordinary informal Island Council meeting was held on 12 November 2025 to address the matter.

After thorough discussion, the Island Council supported the Governor's proposal to decline the revised subsidy arrangements submitted by Sure and to refrain from submitting a counterproposal. The Council further endorsed the exploration of alternative options for the future provision of mobile telecommunications services on Ascension Island, acknowledging the potential risk of temporary disruptions during the transition period. This decision was made with the long-term interests of the island community in mind.

The AIG emphasized the importance of connectivity for daily life, work, and maintaining contact with loved ones. The government is collaborating closely with employing organizations and other stakeholders to identify the best possible outcome for the community.

As the process progresses, the AIG committed to keeping the public informed and expressed appreciation for the community's trust and patience during this transitional period.
