In a landmark ruling on January 19, 2026, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court in Ndola convicted United Chemicals Zambia Limited (UCZ) for orchestrating a tax fraud scheme involving fabricated export operations. The court ordered the company to repay ZMW 11.1 million to the state, marking a significant victory in the fight against corporate tax evasion.
Between July 2022 and March 2023, UCZ submitted falsified documents to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), claiming that multiple consignments of cooking oil were exported by road to the Democratic Republic of Congo. This deceptive practice aimed to unlawfully claim zero-rated VAT status on over ZMW 19.1 million in sales, resulting in an evasion of ZMW 10.7 million in taxes.
Upon being confronted with the evidence, UCZ pleaded guilty to eight counts of furnishing false returns and statements. Presiding Judge Tamara Kakusa imposed a ZMW 40,000 fine and mandated full restitution of the evaded ZMW 10.7 million to the ZRA. Additionally, the company was ordered to pay ZMW 400,000 to cover prosecution costs, which has since been settled.
