On March 17, 2025, the Court of Appeal dismissed a writ application by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who sought to overturn an arrest warrant issued against him by the Matara Magistrate’s Court. The warrant pertains to a deadly police operation in Weligama in December 2023, which resulted in the death of a police sergeant.
The court found that Tennakoon suppressed critical evidence and that the Colombo Crime Division team operated without proper authorization during the operation. The ruling emphasized the importance of accountability and the rule of law, especially concerning high-ranking officials.
This decision underscores the judiciary's commitment to upholding legal standards and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of position, are subject to the law.
