Venice Commission to Review Serbia's Judicial Reforms

A delegation from the Council of Europe's Venice Commission is scheduled to visit Serbia on March 16 and 17 to assess recently adopted judicial laws. The Serbian Parliament confirmed that meetings are planned with both the parliamentary majority and opposition representatives.

On January 28, the Serbian Parliament, following a proposal by MP Ugljesa Mrdic, adopted amendments to several key judicial laws, including the Law on Public Prosecution and the Law on Judges. These amendments were passed through an urgent procedure without public debate, drawing criticism from legal experts, the European Union, and opposition parties.

In response to these concerns, Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic requested an urgent opinion from the Venice Commission on February 10. The Commission has stated that its opinion will be issued in due course and submitted for endorsement at its June 2026 Plenary Session.

The Venice Commission's visit underscores the importance of judicial independence and adherence to democratic principles in Serbia's legislative processes. The outcomes of this assessment may influence Serbia's ongoing efforts toward European Union integration and its commitment to upholding the rule of law.
