Montserrat
Montserrat has expanded its e-litigation portal to include mandatory electronic filing of criminal case documents, marking a significant modernization of the judicial system. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court introduced the portal in 2020 for civil and appellate matters, and in 2023, it was extended to civil and family proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court.
The final phase, launched on December 2, 2024, now encompasses all criminal cases. This development aims to enhance efficiency, reduce paperwork, and improve access to justice. Legal professionals and court officials are required to file criminal case documents online, streamlining the process and reducing the potential for errors.
Acting Chief Justice Mario Michel emphasized that these technological advancements represent significant steps toward a more effective and inclusive justice system. The e-litigation portal is expected to strengthen public confidence in the judicial process by ensuring transparency and reliability.
