Liberia Reaffirms Peaceful Border Resolution with Guinea
The Liberian Government has issued a significant policy statement reaffirming its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the border dispute with Guinea, emphasizing that the situation must be handled strictly through dialogue, diplomacy, and established regional and international mechanisms. The government rejects any unilateral actions or inflammatory rhetoric that could heighten tensions along the border.
Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah made this announcement during a press briefing on June 2, 2026. He emphasized Liberia's unwavering commitment to peace, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good neighborliness in its relations with Guinea. Minister Piah stated, "The Liberia-Guinea border situation is not a matter for confrontation, but for calm, facts, and sustained engagement."
He recalled the tripartite engagement in Conakry in March 2026 between the Presidents of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, which reaffirmed that border disputes should be resolved through diplomatic means, with technical follow-up by the relevant national institutions. During this engagement, the leaders agreed to convene a Mano River Union (MRU) Summit, anticipated to take place in July, to revitalize regional consultation on peace, security, and development.
Furthering the March 2026 understanding, President Joseph N. Boakai dispatched a special presidential envoy in April to Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Sierra Leone to follow up on the implementation of the communique issued at the end of the tripartite meeting in Guinea and to prepare for the upcoming MRU Summit. These initiatives reflect Liberia's seriousness about continuous engagement, practical diplomacy, and timely de-escalation of the situation.
The Liberian Government has also maintained consultations with border security and diplomatic partners to keep lines of communication open and prevent the incident from escalating. Additionally, during the recent Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, President Boakai met with President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire and Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya to discuss the urgent need to resolve the border crisis. These engagements underscore the shared recognition among regional leaders that the border dispute must be settled through coordinated diplomacy and regional solidarity.
By reaffirming its commitment to peaceful resolution and regional cooperation, Liberia aims to ensure stability and foster good neighborly relations with Guinea, contributing to the broader goal of regional peace and development.
