Eritrea Urges Action Against Harmful Practices
On August 28, 2026, in Barentu, Eritrea, Mr. Gebrehiwet Tekeste, head of healthcare services in the Teseney sub-zone, called for increased public participation in eradicating harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and underage marriage. Despite existing legal prohibitions, these practices persist in certain areas.
Mr. Gebrehiwet highlighted ongoing awareness campaigns across 11 administrative regions, emphasizing the critical role of religious leaders and local administrators in these efforts. He pointed out that maternal deaths during childbirth are often linked to the consequences of FGM and underage marriage, underscoring the need for societal involvement in combating these issues.
Ms. Hafisa Mohammed from the sub-zone prosecutor's office reiterated that FGM is outlawed under Proclamation No. 158/2007, and underage marriage is prohibited by Article 581 of the Civil Code. She warned that individuals involved in these illegal practices are subject to legal penalties.
Religious leaders expressed their commitment to integrating anti-FGM messages into their sermons, aligning with the legal stance against these practices. Mr. Seium Gebreyesus, the sub-zone administrator, urged the public to actively participate in eliminating harmful practices and called for regular monitoring by area administrators and village coordinators.
Participants of the seminar pledged to strengthen their efforts in eradicating harmful practices and controlling the prevalence of malaria, demonstrating a collective commitment to improving public health and upholding legal standards.
