Brunei Judiciary Opens Legal Year 2026

The Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam inaugurated the Legal Year 2026 on January 22, 2026, marking the commencement of the judicial calendar. The ceremony, held at the Supreme Court building, was attended by members of the judiciary, legal professionals, and government officials.

Chief Justice's Address

Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong delivered the opening address, highlighting the judiciary's achievements over the past year and outlining strategic priorities for 2026. He emphasized the judiciary's role in supporting Brunei's Vision 2035 by ensuring efficient and effective resolution of commercial disputes, thereby fostering investor confidence.

Judicial Cooperation and Reforms

The Chief Justice underscored the importance of international judicial cooperation, citing the renewed Memorandum of Understanding with China's Supreme People's Court and participation in regional forums. He also announced initiatives such as the 'Open Day in Court' program and a pilot Judicial Internship Program aimed at nurturing future legal talent.

Caseload and Statistics

Reviewing the judiciary's workload, the Chief Justice noted an increase in civil filings in the High Court and a stable criminal caseload. The Intermediate Court managed a significant volume of commercial cases, while the Magistrate's Court handled the largest share of cases, with notable increases in criminal filings across all districts.

The ceremony concluded with speeches from Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Dayang Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohammed Taib and Vice President of the Law Society, Mr. On Hung Zheng, representing advocates and solicitors in Brunei Darussalam.
