Puerto Rico Announces Compulsory Visits to Assess Conditions in Housing Projects

The government of Puerto Rico has announced that it will conduct mandatory inspections across 328 public housing projects, encompassing 56,000 units, to assess the living conditions of residents. The initiative, led by Juan Rosario Hernández, director of the Public Housing Administration, aims to ensure the welfare of children and elderly residents, and verify that occupants are authorized to live in the units. This measure follows public outrage over reported substandard living conditions in an apartment where a mother and her two children were residing. Authorities have stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, as the family has since fled. In a related crackdown, 44 illegally occupied units were seized in August, despite thousands of eligible applicants waiting for affordable housing. Officials have also raised concerns that some public housing units are being used for drug trafficking operations. The inspections are planned to be completed by the first week of March 2026.
