The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development (MFOR) in Kiribati conducted its inaugural "Evidence Gathering & Court Presentation in Fisheries" training from October 1-3, 2025, at the Marine Training Center in Betio, Tarawa. This groundbreaking initiative aimed to enhance the capabilities of fisheries enforcement officers by providing them with comprehensive knowledge on legal responsibilities under the Fisheries Act, effective evidence collection related to fisheries violations, and insights into courtroom procedures for handling such offenses.
The training was attended by oceanic and coastal enforcement officers, fisheries observers, and fisheries assistants from various regions, including the outer islands and the Line Islands. A significant component of the program was a mock trial, designed to simulate real-world courtroom scenarios, thereby boosting the participants' confidence and proficiency in legal proceedings.
The primary objective of this training was to strengthen the enforcement capacity of officers, ensuring the legal protection of marine resources. By equipping officers with the necessary skills and knowledge, the MFOR aims to bolster the monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) framework within the fisheries sector.
The MFOR expressed its gratitude to the Pacific Regional Oceanscape Program (PROP) for their funding support and acknowledged the Attorney General's office for facilitating the three-day session. This collaborative effort underscores Kiribati's commitment to sustainable fisheries management and the enforcement of legal frameworks to protect its marine resources.
