Hong Kong Court Dismisses Appeals in National Security Case

A Hong Kong court has dismissed all appeals in a significant national security case involving 47 pro-democracy activists charged with conspiracy to commit subversion for organizing an unofficial primary election in 2020. The court upheld the convictions and sentences—ranging from four to ten years—for 45 activists, and dismissed all appeals from 11 activists, including former lawmakers. The judges found the primary election was an unlawful plan to paralyze the government and force a leadership resignation. Critics, including Amnesty International and foreign governments, denounced the ruling, arguing it suppressed lawful political dissent. The Hong Kong and Beijing governments defended the law as essential for stability. Nearly 20 activists have since been released, including former district councilors. Supporters gathered at court, showing solidarity with the activists.
