Greenland Gains Permanent Seat in Nordic Council Presidium

On October 30, 2025, the Nordic Council announced a significant reform, granting Greenland, along with the Faroe Islands andŒland, permanent seats on its Presidium. This decision marks a historic step towards more inclusive and modern Nordic cooperation.

The Presidium, the Nordic Council's senior decision-making body between annual sessions, will now include representatives from these territories on an equal footing with Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. This change reflects the Nordic Region's commitment to equality, respect, and collective responsibility.

Henrik Møller of Denmark, a member of the Nordic Council Presidium, emphasized that this reform is not merely symbolic but a tangible sharing of responsibility. He stated, "This isn’t just a change on paper. It is about sharing responsibility for co-operation and making it reflect the Nordic Region of today, a region characterised by equality, respect and collective responsibility."

Representatives from the newly included territories expressed their enthusiasm. Høgni Hoydal from the Faroe Islands highlighted the opportunity to contribute to a visionary Nordic agenda, while Annette Holmberg-Jansson ofŒland noted that the inclusion provides a clearer voice and responsibility in shaping the region's future. Justus Hansen from Greenland expressed anticipation for the governments to update the Helsinki Treaty accordingly.

This reform, effective from January 1, 2026, demonstrates the Nordic Council's proactive approach to making cooperation more relevant and inclusive, aligning with the realities of the entire Nordic Region.
