Court Denies Bail in Case Over Playing Mujib's March 7 Speech

A Dhaka court has denied bail to Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, former vice-president of Shamsunnahar Hall Union at Dhaka University, and two others in an anti-terrorism case filed over playing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's March 7 speech on loudspeakers. The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act following an incident at Shahbagh.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after hearing the bail petitions. The other two accused are Md Asif Ahmed Shoikot, former employment affairs secretary of the banned Chhatra League’s Shahidullah Hall unit of Dhaka University, and Abdullah Al Mamun, a leader of BCL’s Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall unit.

The charges stem from an event where the accused allegedly played the historic speech, leading to legal action under anti-terrorism laws. The denial of bail underscores the judiciary's stringent stance on activities perceived as violating national security laws.

Legal experts and human rights organizations have expressed concern over the application of anti-terrorism legislation in this context, debating the balance between national security and freedom of expression. The case has sparked discussions about the interpretation and enforcement of laws related to political expression and historical commemoration.

As the legal proceedings continue, the accused remain in custody, awaiting further hearings. The outcome of this case may set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future, influencing the legal landscape concerning political activities and the use of historical symbols in Bangladesh.
